天顶壁画最著名的一小块，被单独割下来做成了独立的一幅。左边是亚当：棕色的头发贴着头皮，眼睛半睁着望向对面，身体从暗绿色与赭色的地景里斜着躺出来，膝盖弯起，腹部被光拉成一条长线。右边是上帝，被一群挤在一起的天使托着，粉白与深红的披风在空中鼓成一团，他的手臂从袍子里伸出来，食指弯着，朝左点过去。中间那一段是空的：两个身体占了画面两端，中间的米白色底子上什么都没有，谁也没碰到谁。这幅画原本是西斯廷礼拜堂天顶的一千多平方米壁画中的一小块，一九八〇年被从顶上揭下来，贴在梵蒂冈博物馆的独立展厅里，用专用材料复制后再挂回原位。天顶的湿壁画颜料含铅，非常脆，取下来的做法其实是把它揭下来做复制品，原件留在原处。米开朗琪罗把全部力气花在那段空白上——整个西方绘画里，没有几处空白像这一处这样有压力。

The most famous fragment of the Sistine ceiling, cut out and made a painting in its own right. On the left is Adam: brown hair laid flat against the skull, eyes half open, looking across, the body lying diagonally out of a landscape of dark green and ochre, one knee raised, the belly drawn into a long line by the light. On the right is God, carried by a crowd of angels packed shoulder to shoulder, his pink-white and deep red mantle ballooning in the air, his arm coming out of the robe with one finger bent, pointing to the left. Between them is empty: two bodies hold the two ends of the panel, and in the pale ground between there is nothing at all. Nobody touches anybody. Michelangelo spent all his strength on that gap — very few blank spaces in Western painting carry so much pressure.
