A polyptych whose wings open outward: unfolded, its twelve inner panels read as a single surface. At the top centre sits God in a red mantle and triple crown, right hand raised in blessing, a golden crown set at his feet; the Virgin reads at his left in deep blue, John the Baptist stands at his right in green with a book. Beyond them, two choirs of angels sing and play. The lower half holds the painting's core: on a green meadow, crowds converge from every direction toward a red-draped altar where a small white lamb stands, its blood running into a chalice, a white dove suspended in concentric rings of light above it. In front, an octagonal stone fountain lifts a thread of water. Commissioned by the Ghent merchant Jodocus Vijd and his wife for St Bavo's Cathedral, it was completed on 6 May 1432; the inscription names Hubert as the initiator and Jan as the finisher. Closed on ordinary days, it opened only for feasts.
