《朱迪斯斩杀荷罗孚尼》约作于 1612—1613 年（一说 1610 年前后），是阿尔泰米西娅·真蒂莱斯基二十岁上下的作品，今藏那不勒斯卡波迪蒙特美术馆；约十年后她在佛罗伦萨又画了同题材的第二版。故事出自《友弟德传》：亚述将军荷罗孚尼围城，醉酒之后被以色列女子朱迪斯与她的女仆割下头颅。这个题材传统上多画结果——她提着人头站在帐外；这幅画偏偏停在中间那一秒：刀还没走完，血已经喷出来，男人的手臂仍在挣。构图是两条斜线交叉，朱迪斯下压的手臂与女仆俯下的身体把躯干夹在正中。背景不留任何信息，光像一盏硬灯直打在三具身体上，蓝、红、白三块颜色在黑里各自独立，边缘切得极硬。此画的订件记录至今不明，1827 年它在那不勒斯被公开出售时，人们才重新知道它的下落。

Painted around 1612-1613, when Artemisia Gentileschi was about twenty, this canvas is now in the Capodimonte in Naples; she returned to the subject a decade later in Florence. The Book of Judith tells how the Israelite widow and her maid beheaded the Assyrian general Holofernes after he had drunk himself to sleep. Most paintings of the theme show the aftermath; this one stops mid-stroke, with the blood already out and the arm still fighting. Two crossed diagonals clamp the torso between them, and a hard, single light leaves everything else in black.
