- 《苏格拉底之死》是大卫 1787 年的布面油画，129.5×196.2 厘米，画的是公元前 399 年雅典监狱里的最后一课：七十岁的苏格拉底被判服毒自尽，狱卒把毒酒端来，他伸手去接，头侧着，食指直直指向天花板，嘴里还在讲。横长的尺幅容得下十几个人物沿床沿一字排开，半开的拱门在左侧，光从那里射入，把构图变成一方舞台。 它不是王室订件：1786 年，二十岁左右的富家青年特吕代纳·德·拉萨布里埃直接向大卫订了这幅画；更早的 1758 年，狄德罗已在《戏剧诗论》里说，苏格拉底之死适合做成哑剧题材。1787 年巴黎沙龙展出时引起轰动，正在巴黎的托马斯·杰斐逊后来写信给画家特朗布尔，说展览中最好的作品…
