西斯廷礼拜堂的祭坛墙有十三米七高，米开朗基罗在上面画了四百多个人，几乎没有一个人穿衣服。他六十岁接手，六十六岁完成，中间隔着那场他亲眼见过的罗马之劫。为了这面墙，他拆掉了佩鲁吉诺早先画在这里的三幅壁画，又让人把墙面砌得向上略略倾斜，好让灰尘落不到画上。画的轴心是基督：他站起来，右臂举过肩，身体略略偏向左边，像刚做完一个动作，又像正要再做一次。以他为圆心，人流向两侧分开——左边的人往上飞，右边的人往下坠，坠到最底下是一条渡船。全画找不到一条可以歇脚的水平线，所有身体都斜着走。一九九〇年代清洗之后，后人添上去的遮羞布被擦掉一部分，蓝得发亮的天空才重新露出来。站到墙前，人先感到一阵旋转，然后才看清其中的每一张脸。

The altar wall of the Sistine Chapel is almost fourteen metres high, and Michelangelo painted more than four hundred figures on it, nearly none of them clothed. He took the commission at sixty and finished at sixty-six, with the Sack of Rome he had witnessed lying between. Christ is the axis: he stands, right arm raised above the shoulder, body turned slightly to the left, as if a movement had just ended or was about to begin. Around him the crowd splits, the left rising, the right falling, down to a ferry boat at the very bottom. There is no horizontal line to rest on; every body moves diagonally. After the cleaning of the 1990s part of the later drapery was removed and the luminous blue came back. Standing in front of it, you feel the rotation first and see the faces afterwards.
