- 一条横展的全景，地面是烧过的赭褐色，几乎不长东西。左上角的天烧成暗红，远处的城镇还在着火；中景一片发绿的水，水上漂着沉船与碎片；右边立着几棵光秃的树，绞架和刑轮架在高坡上。前景挤满了小人：成群的骷髅在活人中间穿行，有的骑马挥镰，有的推车，有的拽人。左中有一节棺材形的陷阱，外面画着十字，一队白衣的人正被赶进去；再往左，一辆装满骷髅头的车由白马拉着，车轮压过倒地的人。右下角一张铺白布的圆桌旁，穿红衣的国王正被骷髅缠住，桌上散着骰子和纸牌。构图取俯角，观者像站在坡上往下看，于是所有人同时被看见，也没有一个人被单独看见。布吕赫尔约在一五六二年画完它，此后它一直挂在马德里的普拉多，木板不大，人物却上百。
