- 一间宫廷内室，光从右侧的两道门与窗涌进来，落到最里面的那一小片地板上，其余的地方一层层沉进暗里。正中站着五岁的玛加丽塔公主，白裙撑得很大，金发亮得刺眼；她左边的宫女半跪着递上水罐，右边的宫女屈膝行礼，前景一只棕色的狗卧着不动。左侧，委拉斯开兹本人站在一块巨大的画布后面，右手持笔，左手托着调色板，眼睛不看画布，而是望出画外——他看的位置正是你站着的地方。后墙上挂着一面小镜子，镜中模糊地映出国王与王后的上半身，他们不在这个房间里，或者说不只在这个房间里。门口有人正走上台阶，逆着光，一只手扶着门框。这幅画一六五六年完成，此后三百年，关于谁在看谁、谁在画谁、镜子里那两个人到底站在哪一侧，一直没有定论。
