A naked young man lies stretched on the ground, filling the lower half of the canvas. His right arm is raised across his face, the forearm screening mouth and nose, so that only half the face shows above it and one eye stares slantwise out of the picture, downward. Both hands are clasped at his brow, knuckles against the temple. The skin is painted so smoothly that the brushwork all but disappears, yet the shoulders and ribs are modelled with complete clarity; the legs stretch away to the right, crossed at the knee, bare feet on stone. Behind him a pair of enormous wings stands upright, the shoulder feathers mixed white, blue and gold, the flight feathers a near-black deep blue that drops to the ground and merges with the dark foreground. A thorned blackberry vine trails beside his leg. Above is another sky: a file of pale angels flying the opposite way, smaller and smaller into the distance, and far off at the right a calm coastline. He is on the ground, and he refuses to look up. Cabanel sent this canvas back to Paris from Rome in 1847 as his annual submission; he was twenty-four.
