《金翅雀》左下角签着「C FABRITIVS 1654」，板面油画，约 33.5×22.8 厘米，只比一张明信片大一点，今藏海牙莫瑞泰斯皇家美术馆。画上几乎什么都没有：一面灰白的墙，一只蓝灰色小木箱钉在墙上，栖杠从箱顶弯出来，鸟停在箱沿侧身相对。头按透视缩短，几乎正对观者；脸的正面是一块红斑，头顶与颊侧黑白相间，翅膀上只斜出一道亮黄；一条细链从脚上垂下，绕过箱底。1654 年画成，同年代尔夫特的军火库爆炸，法布里蒂乌斯死在那场事故里，这幅画是他生命最后一年所知的三件作品之一。此后它失踪两百多年，1865 年在布鲁塞尔重新露面，1896 年被莫瑞泰斯买下。荷兰文原名是这只鸟的昵称「提水工」——金翅雀能被驯到用一只顶针大的小桶从碗里舀水。

Signed and dated 1654, The Goldfinch is oil on panel, about 33.5 by 22.8 cm, in the Mauritshuis. Almost nothing is depicted: a pale wall, a small blue-grey box nailed to it, a curved perch, and a bird turned in foreshortening to face us. A fine chain drops from its foot and loops under the box. Fabritius died in the Delft gunpowder explosion of that same year, and the panel is one of only three works known from his last years.
