1858 年，费利斯·比托在德里拍下这张巴哈杜尔沙二世的肖像（现藏洛杉矶保罗·盖蒂博物馆，蛋白印相）。画里是一位秃顶、蓄着花白胡须的老人，斜倚在铺着白垫的床榻上，手握一根细长的水烟管，头微微仰起，双眼望向画外某处，神情既疲惫又空茫。 照片的主角是莫卧儿帝国的末代皇帝，史称扎法尔——名义上帖木儿与巴布尔一脉最后的继承人，实则早已是英国治下有名无实的傀儡，困居德里红堡；他真正的身份或许是诗人，乌尔都语文学史上最伟大的诗人之一。1857 年印度民族起义中，起义军拥立年迈的他为象征性领袖，这使他在英国人眼中成了叛乱的共谋。1858 年英军攻入德里，他藏身城外一处宅邸，不久被俘。 比托正是在这一动荡时刻抵达德里的。此后英国人处决了他的几个儿子，把他流放到遥远的缅甸仰光；这位一生几乎未离开德里的老皇帝，1862 年客死异国，葬在一座无名墓旁。这张照片因此成了他留在世上最后的形象之一：一个王朝最后的体面，被压缩在一个垂老之人斜倚吸水烟的姿态里。

In 1858 Felice Beato photographed Bahadur Shah II in Delhi (albumen print, J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles): a bald, white-bearded old man reclining on white cushions, holding a long hookah stem, his head tilted up and his eyes on something outside the frame. Zafar, as he signed his Urdu verse, was the last emperor of the Mughal line - a nominal sovereign under the British, resident in the Red Fort, and one of the greatest poets of his language. The rebels of 1857 had proclaimed him their figurehead; Delhi was stormed, he was taken captive, his sons executed, and he was exiled to Rangoon, where he died in 1862.
