1858 年的德里，费利斯·比托把相机架在库瓦特-乌尔-伊斯兰清真寺那道巨大的尖拱正前方，拍下了这张以铁柱为中心的照片（现藏洛杉矶保罗·盖蒂博物馆，蛋白印相）。拱门正中立着一根细长的锻铁柱，几乎顶到画面三分之二高；左下角三个穿本地衣服的人，头顶只到柱身很低的一处。 画面里叠着两层时间。那根柱子常被误称为阿育王柱，其实与阿育王无关：柱上的梵文铭文记述一位名叫月光的国王的功业，一般被认作笈多王朝的旃陀罗笈多二世，年代约在公元四到五世纪，而且它多半是从别处运来的。它身后那道刻满阿拉伯文字带的拱属于十二世纪末到十三世纪初的这座清真寺，按传统说法用的是拆自附近印度教与耆那教庙宇的石料。 还有一个不安静的年份。1858 年是印度民族起义的第二年：英军在 1857 年 9 月攻陷德里，随后是长期的报复与清算，比托正是跟着军队进场的摄影师之一。他把镜头对准一根一千五百年的铁柱，让两个时代的形状互相衬托——这张安静的建筑照，是在一座仍在戒严的城里拍的。

In Delhi in 1858 Felice Beato set his camera square in front of the great pointed arch of the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque and photographed the iron pillar standing in its opening (albumen print, J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles). The slender forged column rises to about two thirds of the plate; three men in local dress at lower left reach only a little way up its shaft. Two eras are stacked in one frame: the pillar, often mislabelled an Ashoka pillar, carries a Sanskrit inscription honouring a king called Chandra, usually identified with the Gupta ruler Chandragupta II of the fourth or fifth century, while the arch behind it, built at the end of the twelfth and start of the thirteenth century, is traditionally said to have used stone taken down from nearby Hindu and Jain temples.
