约 1662 年，维米尔把一个女人放进一间只有一个人的屋子里（大都会艺术博物馆著录：布面油画，45.7×40.6 厘米，接近一张纸的大小）。她右手推开铅条玻璃窗，左手扶着一只金属水壶，壶口对着桌上的浅盘——晨间盥洗，荷兰画里长期与贞洁、婚姻责任连在一起的老题材。可维米尔把情节减到只剩一个动作，然后让光接管整幅画。 这间屋子没有靠透视线搭建。墙、地面与桌子的收缩全部交给明暗与颜色完成，于是房间显得比实际更小、更近，像观者正站在门口。光从左边那扇窗进来，先落在她伸出的手臂上，再顺着白色头巾的褶皱滑到深蓝的裙子上；桌上的东方地毯、墙上的地图、椅背上的蓝布，都在彼此身上留下对方的颜色。 它的归宿带着一点讽刺：一八八七年，美国收藏家亨利·马昆德以八百美元在巴黎买下它带回纽约，那是出现在美国的第一个维米尔；此后它连同马昆德其余收藏一起捐给大都会艺术博物馆，成了该馆荷兰画的门面。一个生前几乎没有留下交易记录的代尔夫特画家，要到祖国之外才被真正定价。

Around 1662 Vermeer put a woman alone in a room (Metropolitan Museum catalogue: oil on canvas, 45.7 x 40.6 cm, barely the size of a sheet of paper). Her right hand pushes the leaded window open, her left holds a metal pitcher above the basin - the morning toilet, a subject long tied in Dutch painting to chastity and marital duty. Vermeer reduces the story to a single gesture and hands the rest of the picture over to light. The room is not built with perspective lines; walls, floor and table contract through tone and colour alone, so the space feels smaller and nearer, as if we are standing in the doorway. Light enters at left and travels: her arm, the folds of the white head cloth, the deep blue skirt. Carpet, map and the blue cloth on the chair leave each other's colours on their surfaces. In 1887 the American collector Henry Marquand bought it in Paris for eight hundred dollars - the first Vermeer to reach the United States - and it entered the Metropolitan Museum with his bequest.
