Circus Sideshow is an oil on canvas of 1887-88, 99.7 x 149.9 cm, showing the Corvi circus's sideshow parade at the Place de la Nation in Paris - platform, brass band and ticket-selling designed to draw passers into the tent, in a working-class square that had its fairground at night. It is Seurat's first night scene and his first subject taken from mass entertainment.

Dark has fallen. At the centre a man in a conical hat stands on a little platform holding a trombone bell-down; to his left three uniformed players in bowler hats stand in a row behind a rail; a line of gas flames runs along the top and a row of spectators' heads along the bottom. Not one of them looks at another.

Shown at the Salon des Independants in 1888, it was among the least well received things Seurat ever exhibited - cold, empty, like a poster, the critics said. No French institution wanted it; it reached the Metropolitan Museum through the bequest of Stephen C. Clark. Seurat died in 1891, aged thirty-one, having worked the subject for nearly six years in studies and drafts. Fauvism took its pure colour from here, Cubism its flatness.
